Yawo, hailing from Togo in West Africa, embarked on his musical journey at the Experimental Music School of Lomé, where he studied flute, classical guitar, and electric bass. As the leader of the high school orchestra he formed with his brother and sister, he honed his talent for composition and musical arrangement, blending the traditions of the Ewe tribe with Western influences. After founding MIMI-Togo, he joined Up With People in 1993, touring the United States and Europe to promote peace. Upon returning to Canada after his time in Togo, he pursued a solo career, releasing acclaimed albums like "Celebrate" and "Take Out the Fences," exploring a fusion of afrobeat, afrofunk, and reggae.
