Lysistrata

Lysistrata

The classic anti-war play with a modern twist

First performed in 411 BCE, this ancient Greek comedy was written at the height of a devastating war between Athens and Sparta. In the play, the women of both sides band together to convince the men to make peace, using the only power they have: sex. They vow to withhold sex until their husbands stop fighting.

The adaptation of Lysistrata by Ellen McLaughlin was first performed in 2003 to protest against the war in Iraq.

“It was meant to be a frankly comic and, well, joyful, response to a dire moment in history, drawing people who were frightened and angry into a community of protest, letting us laugh at the absurdity of war and also giving us hope that human beings are better than that,” says playwright Ellen McLaughlin. McLaughlin has updated the play again, just for our Dawson production, as we perform in the wake of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
